Definition of the field:
Translational medicine, defined here as the continuum of activities that extend from conception of a molecular therapeutic strategy and development of this strategy from preclinical to clinical testing, aims to create new therapies for human diseases.
Challenges:
Numerous factors adversely affect the translation of therapeutic strategies, discovered at the ‘bench,’ to the ‘bedside.’ Translational medicine requires a breadth and depth of expertise, ranging from molecular medicine to development and protection of intellectual property, identification of funding sources, design of preclinical studies for development and validation of the idea, familiarity with regulatory agencies and clinical trial design. A significant disconnect currently exists among these various components. This disconnect results in significant delays, often marked by the failure of translating research into therapeutics.
Needs:
In recent decades, the understanding of basic human biology and pathophysiology has expanded at an ever increasing rate. Often this knowledge remains in the lab due to the above mentioned challenges. Unfortunately, no formal training exists that could create a research professional capable of acting as an interface among the various components of the itinerary. The conference attendees agreed that young professionals should be provided with the tools necessary to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical medicine.
Mission Statement:
The Institute’s mission is two-fold: to enhance professionals’ knowledge in translational medicine; and promote critical thinking across the professions for physicians, scientists, and business professionals. The program will prepare international leaders in translational medicine who will facilitate the evolution from lead identification to proof of concept in humans. Drawing upon the expertise of internationally recognized experts in research, education, and institutional authorities, educational content is aimed at fostering innovative teams, critical thinking and personal mentoring. The ultimate goal of this endeavor is to produce multidimensional leaders, prepared for a wide range of careers focusing on improving human health.
The three pillars of the educational program are:- Attitude of teamwork
- Skills of critical thinking
- Knowledge of translational medicine
The intensive 8-day program will include case discussions that will address key topics and challenges in translational medicine including: discovery from basic science (including target validation), securing intellectual property (IP), identification and validation of a translational strategy, preclinical activities (toxicity studies, CMC, IND preparation), clinical trial designs (bioethics, biostatistics, regulatory), and fundraising.
Case studies will be used to facilitate discussion and innovative problem solving strategies to address the challenges facing drug development today (listed above). Participants will develop novel strategies to build new kinds of teams to facilitate the development of drugs in an interactive environment and through mentorships. Case studies will be designed by leading international professionals. Hands-on opportunities to hone communication skills will be provided.
Application:
20 candidates will be selected to participate in the program. To apply, candidates will submit a CV, a one page letter of needs and expectations, and one letter of support.
Participants will receive a certificate of completion that will demonstrate a deeper understanding of Translational Medicine from an international perspective and development of skills in communication, critical thinking, and management/team building.
